To clarify on this (and to possibly also recruit contributors ): OpenStreetMap Carto has worked towards supporting higher resolution rendering for more than a decade - relevant early work is, in particular, https://github.com/openstreetmap-carto/openstreetmap-carto/issues/1165. Another key step was https://github.com/openstreetmap-carto/openstreetmap-carto/pull/3657. This work was substantially stalled by an ugly Mapnik bug (https://github.com/openstreetmap-carto/openstreetmap-carto/issues/2750), which led to some polygon patterns (in particular wetlands) being the only remaining aspect of the style that does not scale properly on higher resolution renderings (discussed [here](https://github.com/openstreetmap-carto/openstreetmap-carto/issues/2038#issuecomment-586732159)). There are some other things (in particular very narrow line signatures) that could use some tuning specifically for higher resolution rendering, but that is a fairly perfectionist concern.

It would probably be useful btw. if OSMF operations would clarify if supplying higher resolution OSM-Carto tiles hinges on the lack of worktime (hence volunteers interested in working on this are welcome) or if it is a strategic/economic decision not to (OSMF does not want to put infrastructure into this, even if there were volunteers willing and able to set this up and maintain it).
