Actually what I think what the user would expect in this case, would be to see a map with an orange line indicating how version 1 looked. I guess that's probably kind of difficult because the background map would not match up with the orange line in that case.
So maybe like you said perhaps rewarding the link might be the easier solution.
However it would still be neat to see where that orange line would go for version 1, without having to switch to a different website to find out. Even if the background map would not match up anymore.
