Well no I didn't try it on low zooms because you were talking about the maxZoom limit... I can't reproduce it on low zooms even with a very small window size and in any case I don't see why this layer would be different to any others other than that it allows larger zooms.

Thanks for your work on this @pnorman and I still think this is OK to merge in it's current state.
