I think you're right, I couldn't make much progress with this approach. In the meantime, I have created an alternative for click() with key modifiers included: https://github.com/mmd-osm/openstreetmap-website/commit/2a6a0525cc59886a2c961ea594141d1c9491ea55

This is seems to work ok here...
