This looks good to me. I think basing the initial display on the media breakpoint is a good idea. It works for me locally too, in a variety of starting widths and when changing the browser width dynamically.

I've reviewed the code too, and it seems to make sense. However, I'm cautious about how all this works exactly. I'll give it a few days to give other maintainers a chance to jump in, just in case I've missed something.
