I had a chat with @gravitystorm recently about this PR, where he provided feedback which I have now addressed. To avoid confusion, I have done this in separate commits on top of the existing ones. This is both so that it's easier to follow what I intended at each step, as well as to make it easier to drop/alter any of the changes wit less squash/rebase trouble. After we reach agreement, I can squash everything into the right places.
