I think some of the awkwardness is that the element page and the current version page are so different. If the current version page were to include the geometry overlay on the slippy map and the list of parent relations, it would be functionally equivalent to the element page. Most things would still point to the element page, but we would no longer need to distinguish between the two pages so clearly in navigation headings. We wouldn’t even need a “Version #” heading separate from the version navigation bar. (Compare MediaWiki’s behavior when viewing a page versus a permalink to its latest revision.) On the other hand, I guess I would like to see the current version page differ even more: #6761.
