Thanks @leijurv for your work on this. I agree with @hlfan that this is too much reaching into Leaflet internals for my taste. It looks like you might be making progress with getting this fixed upstream too, which would be what I recommend.

If it gets fixed upstream that benefits all Leaflet maps, and depending on how things go here, might make it into our codebase before the MapLibre migration completes.

So I'm going to decline this PR, but thanks again for taking the time to work on it!
