I’ve gone through the discussion on #7316 again, as well as #7354 along with the discussions on my PR #7359.
First, I agree with @gravitystorm that notifications should represent something that happened, rather than the current state of the underlying relationship.
With that in mind, I’d suggest the following model:
1. Use a green dot, rather than a number, for unread notifications.
If there is at least one unread notification, show a green dot on the Notifications entry. If there are none, the dot disappears. The user mainly needs to know “there is something here I haven't dealt with yet”, and this also avoids mixing notification counts with unread messages. Unread notifications could have the highlighted tone, while read notifications could hve the normal tone.
2. Give users four explicit bulk action buttons on the top:
Select all | Mark as Read | Mark as Unread | Delete
I think all four have distinct purposes:
Just like the GitHub-style interaction that some of us are already familiar with.
3. For #7354/#7359, I would keep orphaned notifications rather than delete them.
I agree with @pablobm’s latest direction here. If the `Follow` or `Trace` record disappears, the notification itself shouldn’t disappear with it. It should remain in the notification history, but be rendered in a subdued way to indicate that the associated content is no longer available.
My suggestion would be to simply strike through the original notification — for example, ~~“You were followed by X”~~ — and add a short line below it indicating that the notification is no longer available.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this approach.
