Dear all,
We've all been anticipating an update on the automated cleanup and
here is the latest news.
Work is continuing on the redaction software, with Matt doing the bulk
of the coding. Those with an interest may watch the code updates as
they happen.[1] Several of you will recognize your contributions in
the list of commits. That sort of help, diving into the code and
offering patches, is welcome and encouraged. Please continue. Thanks
to all of you, especially to the indefatigable Matt Amos. Your help
is appreciated.
The challenge that has required additional attention arose when the
redaction tests were tested against a larger corpus of test data. Some
tests delivered unexpected results and have required revision. If you
have specific, real world data example that you think will make
interesting test cases, please present them on the rebuild list.
Thanks to all of you and particularly Frederik Ramm for the
interesting, varied and challenging real world data for the test
cases.
Andy Allan has agreed to commit time and code to the redaction tools
as well. It will be a welcome improvement to have two experienced
developers on this with greater regularity. It is unlikely that we
can trick them into setting a deadline other than, "as soon as
possible" and "when it is good enough, but no sooner".
Once the tests are passing on the expanded test data, the schedule
will return to the previously announced phases; Limited bounding box
tests, larger test areas, then the rest of the planet. Those phases
will be announced with as much notice as possible, consistent with
progressing with limited delay. You can appreciate that both of those
are desirable while also being in tension with each other.
We'll update rebuild weekly, until completion, even if only to say
"still working on the tests".
Watch the rebuild list or #osm IRC channel.[2]
