By junction-node I mean something that Adam already stated in his mail. It
is basically a node that is used by more than one way. Junction nodes are
the only points where you can change your direction while driving, thus they
are the only ones relevant for calculating a route. All the other nodes are
only relevant for rendering...
Well ok, you can use the junction node +1 to calculate the angle of the turn
and so tell the driver how "sharp" to turn into the next way ;)

BTW: this is something off topic but may be not. While driving where is one
idea that more and more often pops into my mind and this is about corner
speed. ;) I thing it would be possible to use the OSM data to calculate the
maximum corner speed you can drive through a corner and thus give a warning
to the driver if he is to fast. 
IRCC BMW is currently working on this...
