Dear Adrian,
what do you mean?
If 2 ways are connected there must be a node connecting them
in the current API-XML-Format. You may removed nodes that you
do not need for routing after calculating your way+junction-metrics
and removing ways, nodes and relations that are irrelevant for
local routing and for local map-rendering.
Please also do not forget that you need to be able to render
the map locally from the data-format you use because you are
likely to be offline. (If you where reliably online the whole
exercise would be pointless because a big machine capable of
using the current format at your home could do everything for you.)
