Dear Yair and Marco,
My name is Pengyuan Liu, and I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow working at the Urban Analytics Lab at the National University of Singapore. I am writing for the application to join the Scientific Committee for the Academic Track at State of the Map 2022.
Information is my main research interest; how it can be generated, accessed, processed, and retrieved through computer-based systems and the Internet. With a cross-disciplinary background in computer science (particularly in information retrieval and cloud computing) and geography (geographic information analysis and geospatial artificial intelligence), the main focus of my research is the geographies of information and knowledge, with a particular focus on the users’ generated content (UGC) from digital platforms, as well as the representation of urban places on the Web. As one of the typical examples of the crowdsourcing platforms, data and maps from OpenStreetMap has been great assistance helping with mapping and supporting the spatial analysis in my research (see the list of my publications). I am also currently drafting a publication focusing on the prediction of urban development using the UGC content (i.e., geotagged Twitter posts) and data retrieved from the OpenStreetMap.
During my PhD at the University of Leicester (UK), I was a member of the local committee helping organise the conference of GISRUK 2018, which also had an exciting event of Mapathon with the help of OpenStreetMap. I also worked as a reviewer for various conferences (GISRUK 2019&2022, 13th Workshop on Geographic Information Retrieval) and journals (International Journal of Geographical Information Science). However, it is worth noting that as an early-career myself, my experience of being part of academic committees and editorial boards may not necessarily be perfect, I would take it as both a challenge but also a valuable learning opportunity if I were selected for the scientific committee for the Academic Track at State of the Map 2022. I hope to bring my expertise in UGC-related studies and my enthusiasm for OSM to the committee. Thank you very much for your consideration!

Pengyuan.
