Hi all,
A brief report from today's meeting. Eugene has kindly taken the IRC log
which is now on the OSMF site.
We were aware that we've done a lot of "talking about talking" but, as
yet, haven't made concrete minuted progress towards the first role of
SWG (as defined by the OSMF site), to "research the available options".
So, as a first step, we resolved to collate the OSM community's
suggestions on what OSM's strategy should be.
Kai and Dermot have offered to sift through the German-language
community channels. Eugene has offered to do the Russian-language ones.
I've said I'll look through talk@ and the English-language wiki.
As we go, we'll collect our findings here:
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Strategic_working_group/Suggestion_review
A note on scope:
We are looking to collate suggestions that have already been made about
OSM future strategy (e.g. "OSM should grow the mapper base", "OSM should
make special efforts to reach out to the developing world", "OSM should
develop osm.org into a consumer-facing map site to rival Google Maps").
We're not looking for operational suggestions (e.g. "OSM should rewrite
the editor in HTML5" :) ). Nor are we actively inviting new suggestions
as part of this exercise.
We're also not making any judgments about the suggestions: just
collating them. At a future date, SWG can begin to assess the
suggestions against OSMF's stated mission; consider feasibility; and
start to make recommendations as to whether any strategy should be taken
forward by OSMF or indeed pursued outside the organisation. But that's a
way off yet.
If you weren't at the meeting, but would like to help, that'd be terrific.
There are several channels that haven't been covered yet: dev@, other
national mailing lists (e.g. talk-us@ and talk-fr@), and so on. If you
can lend an hour to trawl through one of these, extract any suggestions,
and begin to post on our wiki scratchpad as per above, please do.
Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting today and especially to
those who volunteered to help.
Oh, and Mikel, assuming she didn't jilt you at the altar -
congratulations. :)
cheers
Richard
