Okay, so you changed your mind about "putting stop signs beside the
way at their actual position"?

What you really want is "put stop signs to the right of the road
facing in the direction in which you are supposed to stop if you drive
on the right side of the road, and place them on the left side of the
road facing in the direction in which you are supposed to stop if you
drive on the left side of the road"?

I guess that's unambiguous.  Hopefully it'll have editor support.  In
which case why not put the direction on the node itself (either as
forward/backward, or as a compass heading, or using a relation)?
