That’s a different thing, I think.

branch=* is presumably an identifier for a specific instance of a chain,
where a ref is not appropriate.

I think this is a very good idea.

Public libraries are often similar, and I know there are some local
grocery stores in my area having multiple branches.  Often the branch is
just a city name, but where there are more than on in a city…
