And the question from Pieren is whether anyone can point out a *single
instance* of a platform where compatibility would be broken by not
assuming a closed way is an area.

Really, I think he's being generous.  A map maker should generally not
intentionally create maps which are incorrect in 99% of the cases,
just because of a mistake in the wiki.  I guess there is an argument
for the maker of the map appearing at www.openstreetmap.org to do it,
on the theory that its primary purpose is to help editors, but that's
a far cry from "that tag should never have any actual effect" "On
renderers or any other applications working with OSM data".
