Oneways are easy. Two-way situations like
are awkward to interpret. It's intended for westbound traffic turning
onto the major road, not eastbound traffic turning onto the residential
In this case however, you just need to look for the nearest traffic
signals node to figure out which is the correct orientation for the ASL.
It can't be done by simple junction proximity in this case, however
routers using ASL nodes could discard ASLs encountered within short
distances of traffic light intersections in directions facing away from
the traffic lights.
Major-onto-minor road intersection could be another way of managing
routing discards for particular directions. The ASL faces in the
direction of the most major intersection node if there are two adjacent
candidate intersections. Feels intuitive, but fragile :/
(Having a highway=stop node positioned behind the cycleway=<x>stop
actually makes things easier for both when interpreting direction. The
clue is in the "advanced" :-)
