this seems to be already in wider use (more than 3000 times):
http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/branch#values

Not all values seem to use the same classification, there is really a
lot of significations for "branch", e.g.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Branch_(disambiguation)

If I get your proposal right then I think this is also tagged with
"brand" (used ten times more):
http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/brand#values
http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:brand
