Yes, there is need of a clear separation.
For me:
* doors are always in connection with buildings
* doors are often smaller, e.g. as soon as a normal car is allowed/fits
throught, I call it a gate.

+1 for door_type as it is much easier to start with a new tag compared
to changing an existing one.

thought this would go under material or door:material

lift_gate (de: Schranke) [1] and rolling_gate are gates not doors. Do
not know about rolling_door.

I had a closer look at automatic_door=* which is by far an established
tag. It was introduced without proposal and shows only small numbers of use.

Be carful, doors can be looked, too. You are talking about the operation
modes and not the locking system, I guess.
