That doesn't answer my question.

If al an editor knows is the species, then taxon=[species] is fine.

That's very vague, and I suspect not supportable with evidence. Does
anyone have any?

Then taxon=Quercus (or even taxon=Oak) will suffice.

Again; why do we need species=* and genus=* on that basis?
