‎Whilst hstore will make keys available, it won't make the SQL to use a plethora of new keys any less horrible. The code to handle certain highway=path as either cycleways and footways is more convoluted than it would otherwise be already.

Something like "lua" processing of keys at import would simplify things, but I suspect isn't an option for the main site (because of the requirement to do a database reload if you change the lua script).
