Actually that's not far off. Linguists speculate that American English pronunciation in the northeast is similar to that of English English 200+ years ago.  So you could say that we speak the King's English. (Down with the king!)

They say the same about Canadian French--what's spoken in Quebec today is closer to 18th century French than modern French spoken in France.
