The default would be that side, but the midwestern US has emergency
crossovers on most dual carriageway medians immediately before and after
most overpasses and underpasses that often double as emergency bays if one
isn't able to get off to the right shoulder, when present at all.

plains, though the hard shoulder tends to be optional if it's not an
