[Tagging] Route=* for ways ?

I have a concern with this page:

Somebody found it useful to document the usage of the route=piste tag on 
ways, That looks strange to me, and rather contradict the usage.

The original page before june 2017 was concerning relations type=route, 
route=piste.

The edit looks quite formal, though, so did I miss something about the 
usage of the 'route' tag or am I free to correct ?
