I’ve written 2 diary entries about the centres of Rome and Berlin, maybe it is of interest in this context:

For historic cities the centre is typically the castle (often the same location) often nowadays there’s the townhall, while railway stations are usually at the border of the historic city, not the centre centre.

Churches traditionally also tend to be at the borders, because their churchyard was used for burying and to reduce the risk of plagues it wasn’t in the centre.

It depends how old the place is, obviously.
