With a typical hydrant valve, a right-hand screw thread becomes 'turn left
to open' and vice versa.

One hopes that the caps and the valve(s) both open in the same direction,
but there are lots of strange old hydrants about. Most of the ones near me
have markings like

↶ OPEN

or

OPEN ↷

on both the caps and the bonnet.
