That's a good question, Brian.  On its face, it would be more consistent to keep this in the place=* key.  I like both of your choices, as the concept doesn't really have a single word to describe "lakes" in the plural as distinct from the singular (as archipelago does for island).  The community can continue to discuss which might be better and why.
