[Tagging] destination:ref with direction?

Wouldn't it make more sense, and isn't it already more common, for
destination tags to contain the information on the destination signs, which
*do* differentiate direction? This ends up as an important distinction
particularly at freeway interchanges, where, say, going southbound, the
ramp to westbound is a left exit instead and eastbound is a right exit,
opposite driver expectation.
I feel like this is another example of "the wiki was written by someone
with inadequate information."
