The modern Erie Canal follows the Mohawk River from the Crescent Dam above
lock #E6 to just below lock #E19 in Frankfort (and it then parallels the
river, rejoining it briefly in Rome).

For most of that reach, the dams and weirs raise the river for navigation,
as well as calming its natural rapids.

I don't think it makes much sense to tag it as anything but a river.
