is likely used mostly as synonym of roman_catholic by people unaware
of other denominations calling themself "catholic XYZ"

But "old tagging method is almost not applied at all" is misleading:
246k denomination=catholic
catholic tag is used exactly 3 times worldwide:
https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/catholic

denomination=roman_catholic 123k
denomination=ukrainian_greek_catholic 2k
greek_catholic 2k

So one variant is used about 127 000 times, another 8 times.

Not exactly specified in about 246 000 cases.

I would rather resurvey and specify exactly this underspecified ones
over promoting unused tagging scheme more widely.

Retagging denomination=catholic to =roman_catholic is not harder
than adding catholic=roman tag  (or even easier given presets)

BTW, if you know some area well you can go to, press "Wizard" button
(or translated version)
and type something like

denomination=catholic in Kraków

(replace Kraków with name of city or other area, smaller and better known
to you are better)

and press "Run" button


or open http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/1aaa
and replace INSERTNAME with name of an area

and press "Run" button


This will find objects with denomination=catholic

I just replaced 3 well known to me places with a correct values
(100% accuracy guaranteed - do not use it for edits where it
would be guessing or unverified)
