Andy,

My wording was maybe not precise enough, but my main point was to make
clear that the term "cycleway" in OSM refers to road infrastructure (mainly
or exclusively) dedicated to bicycle traffic, and not to the objects that
we describe as cycle routes in OSM.
I am familiar with the different shades of cycleways, in particular in
Italy, and I am not referring to the German wiki pages.
I am fully aware of the confusion between the terms, which is present also
in cyclists' association or even in government documents.
At the practical level of mapping, I follow the JOSM presets, trying to
"project" the Italian "hardware" categories on the OSM terms, as defined in
the English wiki using JOSM presets.
(this refers specifically to the fact, that in Italy cycle lanes (in OSM)
that are separated from the motorized-traffic lanes by a continuous line,
are called "pista ciclabile" (the same term used for separate cycleways),
even though most people call them "corsia ciclabile" (cycle lane).
