It may be wood extraction, but it may also be recreation or environmental protection; in many cases, such as public forests in France, forestry areas are used concurrently for the three goals. That also explains why saying that "this land is used for forestry" is tricky: forestry is technically the mean of land use, not the land use itself. Besides, the goal of forestry is not unique: it is often wood extraction, but not always and not only.
