That's the most common kind.  There are laybys which are a short length
of what looks like a service road that branches off the main road and
rejoins it, but they're uncommon.  They're the type that is most
likely to have toilet facilities, although toilets are rare even on those.

Here is one of the alternative forms of layby.  Look carefully near the
road sign and you can see the food van that is there on a daily basis.

it would be nice to have a good way of indicating those short lengths of
road are a layby.
