[Tagging] Canal not showing through park?

Recently added an intermittent drain, which feeds into what has previously
been tagged as a canal, which runs through a park to an existing waterway.

The drain is now showing, but the canal isn't :

although it's there in edit mode:
https://www.openstreetmap.org/edit#map=18/-27.92809/153.37956.

I've seen lots of other waterways showing up while running through parks,
so why isn't this one?

I notice it's tagged as area=yes - would that have any effect?
