British English makes the same distinction. We also have "hire" which
is often used synonymously with "rent" (strictly speaking, you rent
things with a fixed location such as houses and hire moveable things
like cars).  Also you borrow a car from your neighbour; your neighbour
lends you a car.

However, these libraries of things can operate on a loan system, a hire
system or a refundable deposit system.  It is entirely up to the operator
which system they use, and they may even loan some things, require
a deposit for other things, and charge a fee for yet other things.
