Does the English word "inscription" include characters painted on
something (German: Aufschrift) or only characters carved into
something (German: Inschrift)? If it does also include characters
painted on something, then `inscription` seems to be a good idea to
me.

But this and the referenced discussions (especially this reply: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2021-January/059087.html) have convinced me so far that some other title tag would be more appropriate. iD does not have "name" in the preset for maps; and for information boards in https://github.com/openstreetmap/id-tagging-schema/issues/64 it was asked to substitute "name" by "board:title" (without response yet).
