same as in German, I believe the definition given by Raphael is more restrictive than the actual usage. An inscription painted on a building (dedication) could be called Inschrift. It’s also the purpose and context that makes the distinction of Inschrift, Beschriftung or Aufschrift and to some extent their use is overlapping.
