When I do routing maps and have to portray some indeterminate paths from
polylines that terminate on the boundary of some arbitrarily shaped
polygon, sometimes with holes, I generate a Straight Skeleton and connect
it via a closest point on the skeleton to the endpoint of the polyline.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straight_skeleton
The difference in length of the absolute shortest path between any given
pair of polyline endpoints on the polygon and the length via the skeleton,
in practice is usually minimal, especially compared to the network as a
whole.
