(1) plateau = “altopiano” in italian = alto-piano

alto = high
piano = flat area

(2) “piano” in italian = flat area, on a slope, usually limited in size (tens-hundreds of meters). Also called “clot” or “chiot” in local dialect (north-west of Italy, southern France).
