Some countries call them "freeways" instead of "motorways" (even when
tolled). Australia posts regulatory signs for the start and end of a
freeway and at on-ramps, though I'm not surprised to hear that the signs
are sometimes aspirational:

A better example would be the U.S. Some states post a nearly identical
destination sign at freeway on-ramps. However, these signs haven't put
to rest the debate about where *exactly* a highway=motorway should begin
and end.

As far as I know, only one state, California, post signs along the main
roadway to tell you exactly where the freeway grade begins and ends. But
even here, the signs are often inconsistent, forcing us to do our own
homework:
