Given significantly wider and varied participation here and being
more accessible while still not being a proprietary platform,
mailing lists actually are much more authoritative that wiki talk pages.

only tiny minority of people reading wiki are aware of wiki talk pages,
and pool of people commenting there is even tinier
(this is based on my extensive OSM Wiki editing activity: getting even
one response is rare, getting active discussion is extremely unusual).
And responses often arrive after years, with many discussions having
10+ years between people commenting.
https://community.openstreetmap.org/ has decent chance to become
more prominent, but for now tagging mailing list has the broadest base.
There are some Slack/Discord/Telegram channels but all of them having
barriers to use (but often having much better interface), but none has
greater and more varied contributors, at least for now.
