but many people skip it, especially with platforms forming dead end for
pedestrian footway.

Mapping footway center line  (highway=footway) on edge of platform is not
tragically wrong, but I would map it at actual footway center line (at least a bit
from edge).

There are several competing schemes in use, and sometime people proclaim
their preferences as sole viable solutions. So I would take tagging advice here
with greater skepticism than usual.
