I've mapped windows on a few public buildings for 3d rendering purposes 
and using nodes makes the mapping workflow easier – consider, for 
example, the ability to use JOSM's "distribute nodes" tool and to 
control the width by selecting all window nodes and changing the width=* 
tag.

I do not object to mapping windows as ways that share nodes with the 
building outline, that seems like a fine alternative to me. But there 
are relatively few cases where they offer an advantage over nodes with 
width=*, so I assume that most mappers won't find the extra effort worth 
it. Even with nodes, we're firmly in micro-mapping territory here.
