Thanks Brad, I learned something.  For those that are interested, here is a
whole article on the subject[0]. It is always interesting to hear cases
where language differs even within a region of the US.  Notwithstanding
what these features are called in parts of the SW US, from an OSM
perspective, I would hope we could agree to tag them as natural=water, and
water=pond (or water=reservoir).
