+1. There was mention of intermittent earlier in this thread but I
not sure that helps very much.

Almost all the "ordinary" fords that I come across in the UK are highly
variable, and with climate change are becoming more unpredictable.
That is especially true of paths in mountainous areas, but also applies
to vehicles crossing fords on minor roads. As you say, anything from dry
to suicidal.
