Despite having it used for many years, I never really liked crossing=uncontrolled with the intended meaning to be a crossing controlled by zebra markings and zebra signs.
Around here we’re now using crossing=zebra to mean a zebra crossing (zebra markings and no traffic signals).

other mappers around here have been adding crossing_ref=zebra to all crossings with zebra markings (including those controlled by traffic lights). From discussions I learned that some people believe the tag is for a specific crossing type, others that it is about road markings only
Personally for the area where I map, 3 pedestrian crossing types are sufficient, and each can be expressed with 2 tags:
highway=crossing and
1. crossing=unmarked
no marked crossing but pedestrians crossing there for reasons
2. crossing=zebra
a zebra crossing
3. crossing=traffic_signals
pedestrian crossing controlled by lights
