Thanks I understand that as where a building may have multiple uses, or the
main use is not for shops (apartment or office building with shops on the
ground level), then you can tag entrance=shop to indicate this entrance
doesn't lead to the residences/offices but instead to shops.

Good to see the note about dedicated shop buildings (eg a hardware shop
which has its own dedicated building) should still use entrance=main to
simply tag the main entrance to the shop.

I'm not convinced this is the best or only way to address this, but I think
it's okay and reasonable to document it. Normally I would try to do indoor
mapping tagging the shop as an area inside the building and then place an
entrance node=* intersecting both the building way and shop=*/indoor=room
way.

node, and the node is the entrance to that shop. I can see this being used
where you have a building with multiple shops inside but each shop has its
own dedicated entrance and where you haven't done indoor mapping to tag the
area of each shop within the building.
I can't see any reason why you would need to refine entrance=shop with more
detail about the shop entrance, if you did you'd need to use a different
tag.
