Sorry, this was copypasta on my part. I meant to link to subject=*, not
subject:wikidata=*. I've fixed the typo; sorry for the confusion. [1]

The two keys are similar, but artwork_subject=* is only applicable to
artwork and seems to be a broad categorization of the artwork, at least
in popular usage. By contrast, subject=* has long been used on a variety
of features and indicates the subject that the feature depicts,
discusses, symbolizes, commemorates, or otherwise pertains to. As a
freeform key, its value can be as broad as "arts" or as specific as the
Virgin Mary.

Because the set of possible values of subject=* is unbounded, the
combination with subject:wikidata=* is especially appropriate. But if
artwork_subject=* is limited to a handful of values as the documentation
implies, then artwork_subject:wikidata=* would have little benefit
except to clarify a very rare, exceptional value that would otherwise be
inscrutable to other mappers. (denomination:wikidata=* is currently used
in that fashion.) If artwork_subject=sheela-na-gig is approved, then the
data item for it can link to Q509424 without needing to introduce that
value into the database.

Incidentally, there's a draft proposal for more specific keys than
subject=* when an artwork or other feature depicts something other than
that which it commemorates. [2]
