Yes, as a native British English speaker, it would be odd. A small patch 
of grass (e.g. the centre of a roundabout) is not a grassland.

I don't think there are any strict definitions but grassland is (at 
least in my mind) for larger expanses of grass-dominated land. Often not 
mowed/cut and therefore allowed to grow to a substantial height, though 
this is sometimes restricted by animal grazing or the occasional 
harvest. It's more of a habitat, rather than just a patch of grass.
